Science and technology encompass all fields of scientific and technological knowledge, including agriculture, biological science, chemistry, computer science, mathematics, medicine, the earth sciences, astronomy, metrology, physics, the natural sciences and engineering. The aim of collecting is to develop a science collection to meet basic information needs and to build on existing strengths and support the interests and needs of a broad range of users.
During the 19th- and early 20th-centuries, the Library collected most major scientific and technological books and periodicals, resulting in extensive historical collections, notably in botany and ornithology. Since the 1970s, collecting has been more selective. Currently the Library acquires a range of introductory monographs and reference tools, including print and digital databases. Historical and biographical works are emphasised in all subject areas.
Collecting of popular science works reflects current community interests. Subjects include climatology and the greenhouse effect, energy sources (including renewable energy), endangered species, wildlife conservation and preservation, ecology, salinity, desertification and soil conservation, pollution, and health and safety.
While the Library continues to collect print publications, digital resources are now a major component of the collecting policy, enabling access to a greater range of information than can be collected in print and providing improved searching capability for onsite and remote library users. The collection is enhanced by providing links to current, relevant and authoritative internet sources via the Library’s website and online catalogue.
