Social sciences includes anthropology, business and economics, education, library science and generalities, sport and recreation, psychology and sociology. The interdisciplinary nature of social sciences means there is overlap with other disciplines, particularly the humanities.
Collection development focuses on Australia, with emphasis on Victoria. Material relevant to major countries from which Victorians have emigrated is collected, as well as coverage of issues in countries that have particular relevance to Victorian communities.
Apart from social groups, women's studies and aspects of education, the collection is generally at a basic information level, which includes general reference, overviews and a broad range of standard and pivotal works on all aspects of the social science subjects.
In order to give greater depth and immediacy to social science print collections the Library subscribes to digital databases of full-text journal articles and links to the digital texts from government and other relevant bodies.
