FREE WIRELESS ACCESS AT THE LIBRARY From 6 October, any visitor to the Library can access the free wireless service. Previously only available to registered Library users, now anyone can access wireless broadband in the main reading rooms if their laptop or PDA device is wireless enabled.

CHANGES TO LIBRARY REGISTRATION Also from 6 October, registered Library users will now only have to renew their registration once every two years.
Being a registered user means you can order books and journals from storage via our online catalogue, as well as access heritage materials from our pictures, manuscripts, maps and rare books collections.
Registered users can also access articles and ejournals in our databases from outside the Library.

ANNOUNCEMENTS
2008 PREMIER'S LITERARY AWARDS' WINNERS Earlier this month the winners of the 2008 Premier's Literary Awards were announced by John Brumby at a special dinner at Zinc, Federation Square.
Award-winning Melbourne novelist, screenwriter and journalist Helen Garner received the Vance Palmer Prize for Fiction for her novel 'The Spare Room'. She was among 12 writers who share in the $210,000 prize pool.

RE ROSS TRUST SCRIPT DEVELOPMENT AWARD WINNERS Again in early September the annual RE Ross Trust Playwrights' Script Development Awards were announced.
The winning writers and scripts are Lally Katz for 'Return to Earth', Barry Dickens for 'Whitely's Incredible Blue', Carly Nugent's 'Shots' and Angela Betzien's 'The Orphanage Opera'.

ARTS MUSIC VIDEO PROGRAM AVAILABLE NOW The October-November program of arts video screenings is now available. Held on Wednesday afternoons in the Arts Listening-Viewing Room, this program features a selection of renowned classical ballets and operas.

COMING EVENTS
POETRY SLAM IS BACK The search is now on in earnest for Victoria's best slam poet. This popular spoken word performance competition started yesterday with a workshop in Geelong. The Victorian competition will finish at the Library for the state final on 13 November.
The top two Victorian poets will compete for $5000 at the national final in December. Not competing? Why not join the audience to watch the action and help choose the winners.

PETER LYSSIOTIS WORKS ON PAPER - TEMPORARY EXHIBITION A new temporary exhibition by well-known Melbourne artist, Peter Lyssiotis, will be launched in the Library's Cowen Gallery on 3 October. 'The City: A Memory Album' offers an alternative view of how we live in cities and how we remember them.

BOOK TALK: THE WESTERN FRONT DIARIES Held to complement the Library's 'Sport and War' exhibition, this talk by historian Jonathan King looks at one of the great forgotten stories of Australia's war history - the WWI Western Front campaign.
