Literary Awards Announced

Tonight the Premier, Mr John Brumby, announced the winners of two major Victorian literary awards. Eleven category winners in the Premier's Literary Awards were named. In addition, six recipients of the RE Ross Trust Playwrights' Script Development Awards were announced.

The 11 Premier's Literary Awards recipients will share a $195,000 prize pool. They include Alexis Wright, winner of the Vance Palmer Prize for Fiction, for her widely celebrated novel Carpentaria, Danielle Clode, winner of the Nettie Palmer Prize for Non-fiction, for Voyages to the South Seas, and Frank Moorhouse, who won the Alfred Deakin Prize for an Essay Advancing Public Debate.

The RE Ross Trust Awards provide $30,000 in funding for further dramaturgical and development work. Recipients include Penelope Bartlau, Kit Lazaroo and Aidan Fennessy.

The awards were presented at a dinner hosted by comedian John Doyle (aka Rampaging Roy Slaven), with the keynote address delivered by celebrated poet John Tranter.
