Superhero Competition Winners Announced

16 February 2007

The winners of the State Library's 'I Need a Hero' competition, judged by professional comics illustrator Bernard Caleo, have been announced.

They are 'Business Man!' by Alex, age 13, and 'Dirge' by Manga Monkey, aged 14. Business Man!'s gadgets include a super-shady hat, a pen that never runs out of ink, a jacket that makes coffee and shoes that are dirt resistant. Dirge's special ability is 'Quant', which allows her to jump from building to building and makes her stronger than anyone else.

In addition, the best 10 male and female superhero elements have been decided. They range from giant raven wings and flaming feet, hands and tail, to the ability to see the future, transform into animals and be in three places at once.

The Library thanks all entrants for their efforts. The standard was high, and, says judge Bernard Caleo, 'It was hard to choose the winners.'

All entries can still be seen on the website competition pages, and the composite superhero being created by Caleo using the best 10 best male and female elements will be published online soon.
