Accessing the Library's Free Wireless Service
You can access the wireless network throughout the Library.
Follow these steps to access the Library's free wireless broadband service.
Step 1 - Set up for wireless
Ensure your laptop or PDA is wireless enabled, and has a standard wireless LAN card with 802.11b or 802.11g capabilities and a web browser installed.
Step 2 - Use our hotspots
Bring your laptop or PDA to the Information Centre, the La Trobe Reading Room, Experimedia, the Redmond Barry Reading Room or Journals & Magazines - the Library's WiFi hotspots. The wireless hotspot in the Heritage Collections Reading Room can be accessed by those working with heritage materials.
Step 3 - Connect
Connect to the wireless network.
Most laptops are configured for wireless access, and your wireless card should automatically detect the wireless signal. Choose a network:
- Select the SLV network from the list of available wireless networks.
- RMIT students can also select the RMIT network.
Step 4 - Open your browser
Open your preferred browser. Type any URL - other than a secure website (those urls beginning with https://) - into your browser. This will take you to the State Library of Victoria's Wireless Network login page. (You must log in to access the wireless network.)
Step 5 - Read the access conditions
Read the Wireless access conditions and disclaimer. If you accept these conditions, log in.
Step 6 - Log in
Enter a vaild email address to log in to the wireless service as a guest. This address is only used for the one session and is not retained.
The Library's Information & Communication Technology Security Policy will appear on screen. If you agree to the terms and conditions outlined in this policy, click the 'I agree' button at the bottom of the page.
You will then be redirected to the State Library of Victoria website home page.
Step 7 - Browse the web
To view other web pages simply type a URL into the browser address field.
How to print
As the wireless network is not connected to the Library's public printers, to print you will need to:
- save your data to a portable device (a 3.5 inch floppy disk or USB memory stick)
- download your data to one of the Library's public computers and print from there.
