Security

Ensuring the security of the collections, staff and visitors is a top priority at the State Library of Victoria. The following information outlines the Library's security practices and requirements, particularly those affecting the use of reading rooms and other facilities.

Entry & exit procedures

All members of the public must enter the Library through the main entrance in Swanston Street. If you are visiting the Library's reading rooms, and Dome and Cowen Galleries, you must first pass through the security gates and electronic theft detection system. You may also be asked to open your bags for inspection.

Personal property

The type of personal property which can be taken into the Library is restricted. Laptop computers, personal copying equipment (subject to size), notebooks, writing implements and text books are permitted. However, umbrellas, large bags - including backpacks, handbags, and laptop bags - food and drink (except bottled water) must be left in self-service, coin-operated lockers in the cloakroom, which is adjacent to the front foyer.

Please remember that the Library is a busy public institution. It is therefore important to safeguard your personal property at all times. Laptop computers, personal copying equipment, handbags, mobile phones, and other valuable items should never be left unattended.

Security system

A security system is in place to prevent the unauthorised removal of items, as well as to prevent wilful damage or vandalism to Library buildings, material from the collection, or exhibition items.

Photography

The use of cameras - including digital cameras, video recorders and mobile phone cameras - is not permitted in the Keith Murdoch Gallery. Personal copying equipment can be used in all other public areas of the Library, subject to the conditions set out in Self-Service Copying: Using Your Own Equipment.

Photographing the Library building is permitted providing it does not disturb other patrons. Photographing individuals in the Library is prohibited, unless consent is obtained.

Scanners

Digital scanners can be used provided they do not come into contact with Library materials. The use of flatbed scanners is therefore forbidden. For further information see Self-service Copying: Using Your Own Equipment.

Delivery of packages

Staff at the Foyer Desk are unable to accept mail, parcels or courier deliveries. All such items should be delivered to Despatch, near the corner of Little Lonsdale and Russell Streets. The exact location of Despatch is clearly identified on the Library floor plan.
