Dome Galleries

The balconies encircling the domed La Trobe Reading Room house two permanent exhibitions. On level 4 is the Mirror of the World: books & ideas exhibition which looks at the history of book production and illustration from the Middle Ages to the present. On level 5 The changing face of Victoria traces the cultural and social development of Victoria and its people.

Where are the Dome Galleries?

Access to the Dome Galleries is via the lift to the right of the entrance to Experimedia. For the exact location of this lift see the Library floorplan. Take the lift to levels 4 or 5 to visit the exhibitions.

As you walk around the galleries, you will see spectacular views of the dome and the La Trobe Reading Room. A public viewing platform on level 6 also offers visitors another look at this magnificent heritage room.

When are these galleries open?

The galleries have set opening hours and entry is free.

Tours of the Dome Galleries

The Library conducts free heritage tours of the Dome Gallery, the La Trobe Reading Room and the Cowen Gallery. For more information about times and bookings see the What's On Calendar. Tours for school groups are also run; a small fee enables us to provide a qualified teacher as a guide, linking programs to curriculum needs. For more information see the 2007 program of events for schools.
