Beyond the Information Centre is the central lobby, from where you can take the stairs or lifts to the Cowen Gallery. The painting above the lift is View of Melbourne at the end of the millennium by Jan Senbergs, donated to the Library in 1999 by the Gualtiero Vaccari Foundation.

Cowen Gallery

Originally called the Stawell Gallery, this gallery was completely refurbished before it reopened in 2003. Three elegant galleries display important works from the Library’s Pictures Collection. These include 150 portraits and marble busts of individuals who have contributed to our history and culture, as well as topographical paintings of Victoria.

Redmond Barry Reading Room

Named after Sir Redmond Barry, first Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Melbourne Public Library, this superbly restored room was originally built to house the industrial and technological museum. Now home to the Library's general non-fiction collection, this reading room opened in 2004 following total refurbishment.

Walking back through the Cowen Gallery, take the marble stairs up to the La Trobe Reading Room.
