Eating in

The 'Eating in' inquiry unit examines the role of food in the home, and how cooking and eating form an important part of everyday life.

Engage

  • Review the photographs in 'Hungry planet: what the world eats'. Invite students to compose a collage of their own kitchen table and predict what they believe they eat in a week.
  • Provide a variety of supermarket catalogues and magazines containing food images, and challenge students to predict what a healthy food pyramid looks like.
  • Immerse students in a variety of cooking multimedia such as television shows, magazines and blogs.
  • Visit local produce markets and explore the variety of foods available for cooking.

Explore

  • Explore food through taste experiments and eating experiences. (Take care to consider food allergies when choosing products.)
  • Brainstorm adjectives that can be used to describe food, considering all five senses. Construct a sensory word wall or online poster (using a resource like Glogster) to present these words.
  • View various examples of cookbooks, recipe cards and cooking journals.
  • Discover 'What the class eats in a day' by taking photographs of meals and snacks.
  • Investigate the healthy food pyramid.

Explain

  • Support students to present 'What the class eats in a day' data using Create a Graph.
  • Revisit the healthy food pyramid and reflect on the class's food consumption.
  • Invite students to design a healthy lunchbox.
  • Assess the students' understanding of some of the physiological, social, cultural and economic reasons for food choices.

Elaborate

  • Help students develop self-assessment frameworks they can use to evaluate their family recipe publications.
  • Research recipes and menus from Victoria's past.
  • Take a critical look at cookbooks using the Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden Foundation Recipe and menus unit.
  • Deepen understanding of the role food plays in bringing people together, by conducting a philosophical discussion around the traditional tale Stone soup.

Evaluate

  • Use the Publish a family recipe activity to produce a family recipe anthology, and conference with individual students using personal success criteria.
  • Host a banquet as a celebration of the publication of the class's family recipe anthology.
  • Evaluate the students' understanding of healthy food choices by reviewing their healthy lunchbox design.
