Edinburgh & Melbourne, literary cities

What does it mean for a city to be designated a UNESCO City of Literature? What has this special status meant for Edinburgh since 2004, and what can Melbourne expect?

This public forum features presentations by Alison Bowden from the Edinburgh City of Literature Trust and Penny Hutchinson from Arts Victoria. These are followed by a panel discussion moderated by Louise Adler of Melbourne University Publishing.

Alison Bowden is director of the Edinburgh City of Literature Trust, Penny Hutchinson is director of Arts Victoria, and Louise Adler is CEO and publisher-in-chief of Melbourne University Publishing.

Panel members also include:

  • Sandy Grant – chief executive, Hardie Grant Publishing
  • Elliot Perlman – writer
  • Mark Rubbo – Readings Books & Music and board member, Centre for Books, Writing & Ideas
  • Jason Steger – literary editor, The Age

This forum was held at the State Library of Victoria on 11 November 2008.
