Jim Davidson on biography as periscope

Listen to this audio file of award-winning biographer Jim Davidson discussing the cultural 'ambiences' inhabited by his subjects.

Louise Hanson-Dyer opened up the Melbourne musical scene in the 1920s, while historian Keith Hancock invited scrutiny of the universities he attended. By contrast, Stephen Murray-Smith and Clem Christesen were determined to build a culture here rather than seek it abroad.

Jim Davidson is a Principal Fellow in the School of Historical and Philosophical Studies at The University of Melbourne and a former editor of Meanjin. He is currently writing a joint biography of Stephen Murray-Smith and Meanjin founding editor Clem Christesen.

This Stephen Murray-Smith Lecture was held on 8 October 2012.
