Guidelines & application form: La Trobe Society Fellowship

Researchers interested in Victoria's colonial history can apply for a La Trobe Society Fellowship.

The fellowship runs for six months fulltime or 12 months part-time and is worth $25,000. La Trobe Society Fellowships are generally awarded to applicants who don't have access to other grants.

Joint applications will not be accepted.

Please note: this fellowship is not being offered during the 2012–13 financial year.

Fellowship requirements

While research needs to be about Victoria's history during Charles La Trobe's administration as superintendent and lieutenant-governor (1839–54), it can also cover the period immediately before his arrival or the effects of his tenure after his departure.

If your application is successful, you'll need to:

  • start and finish your fellowship in the 12 months immediately following the award's announcement
  • make significant use of our collections
  • spend at least 75 per cent of your research time at the Library
  • publicly present your results at the Library and deposit a copy of your work, if applicable
  • give a special presentation to the La Trobe Society
  • give us and the La Trobe Society the first opportunity to publish your findings, if applicable

Selection process

Applications must be in writing, using the official application form. Your application must include the names of three referees. Late applications won't be considered. All applications will be acknowledged by mail.

Based on the advice of senior Library staff who put together a shortlist, an independent committee of the Library Board of Victoria considers the applicants and makes final recommendations to the Board. A list of all applicants is also given to the committee so those who aren't shortlisted can still be considered.

Once applicants have been considered, Library staff contact selected applicants' referees. Subject to favourable references, the recommended applications are presented to the Board, which then selects the recipient at its June meeting.

Once the recipient accepts, unsuccessful applicants are advised by mail.
