In protest against the ban on women drinking in men-only public bars, Rosalie Bogner (left) and Merle Thornton (mother of actress Sigrid Thornton) chained themselves to the foot rail to enjoy a beer bought for them by a sympathetic patron in the public bar of the Regatta Hotel at Toowong in Brisbane. Merle Thornton went on to establish the Equal Opportunities for Women Association and pioneer the teaching of women's studies in Australia.
