The Voyage of Governor Phillip to Botany Bay

Image of a black cockatoo with red banding on the tail titled Bankian Cockatoo Variety, from 'The Voyage of Governor Phillip to Botany Bay'

The Voyage of Governor Phillip to Botany Bay: with an account of the establishment of the colonies of Port Jackson & Norfolk Island was published in 1789 by Arthur Phillips (1738-1814), the first governor of New South Wales.

It is the official account of the voyage of the First Fleet - which sailed from England in 1787 and arrived in Botany Bay between 18 and 20 January - and the founding of the first British settlement, at Sydney Cove, Port Jackson, on 26 January 1788 (now celebrated as Australia Day).

The publication includes detailed accounts of Captain Arthur Phillip’s first meeting with the local Indigenous population and of his land surveys. It features fascinating early maps and illustrations, including 55 coloured plates of NSW flora and fauna, hand-painted by the voyage’s artists.

This touring Library copy is number 159, from a limited edition of 1000 copies.
