Travelling Treasures
The State Library of Victoria's collection experts take to the road in 2007 with a selection of our treasures. Visiting regional public libraries and schools, the Travelling Treasures program offers children and adults alike the chance to see some of our most precious collection items.
What's on tour?
The following items will be on tour:
- The Voyage of Governor Phillip to Botany Bay - the official published account of the voyage of the First Fleet, based on the journals of Arthur Phillip, first governor of New South Wales, featuring fascinating early maps and illustrations (1789)
- Lazarus Diary - the diary of early settler Samuel Lazarus, recounting his time on the Victorian goldfields and observations of the Eureka Rebellion (1853-55)
- goldfields maps - two original printed maps directing diggers to the Victorian goldfields (c1853)
- Lofty Cannon Collection - a book of sketches by English artist Ronald Searle, depicting scenes from his time as a prisoner of war during World War II, and correspondence from Searle to his soldier mate Henry 'Lofty' Cannon (1943-46).
When and where?
The treasures will be displayed at evening talks given by the State Library's heritage collection experts. Held at public libraries, these talks are free, although bookings are essential. Free sessions will also be held at local primary schools for Grade 5-6 students.
- August - Shepparton, Wangaratta and Bright
- November - Horsham, Warracknabeal and Nhill.
See the Travelling Treasures Program for more information about times, venues and bookings.
