Education Resource
This education resource draws upon the rich educational themes in the exhibition The Independent Type: Books and Writing in Victoria, providing teachers with background information and discussion ideas for pre-visit preparation and post-visit extension activities.
It is designed to enhance student learning through engaging, thinking-based activities. It caters for visitors to both the Melbourne exhibition and the regional touring exhibition, and is intended to be a practical resource beyond the life of the exhibition.
The resource is aligned with Victorian Essential Learning Standards (VELS) and targeted at Years 5-10 students (VELS Levels 4-6) across the curriculum domains of The Humanities: History, English: Reading and Writing, and Interdisciplinary Learning: Communication.

Workshops
During Terms 2 and 3 Education Programs staff will run 'A writer's desk' workshops. In these 90-minute sessions for Levels 5-6 (Years 7-10), students will visit The Independent Type to learn about Victoria's literary past and present. They will investigate the work and writing habits of a selected Victorian author, exploring how that author was affected by their environment and audience. They will then use a blogging site to create a virtual desk and work diary for their chosen author.
Bookings: 03 8664 7555 or learning@slv.vic.gov.au (quote program number KMG100) Cost: $6 per student
