October-November 2009 program

From March to November the Library runs a regular program of music videos selected from our collection. These relaxed Wednesday afternoon sessions, held in the Arts Listening-Viewing Room, are a favourite with music fans. Enjoy free screenings of classic music and dance performances - from popular musicals to opera greats.

When Every second Wednesday afternoon
Where Arts Listening-Viewing Room. Enter via the Arts Reading Room and Audio-Visual Centre (from the Information Centre).
Bookings Not required but early arrival (10 to 15 minutes before scheduled program starting time) is recommended due to limited seating. For groups of more than four people please ring 03 8664 7194 in advance to make arrangements.

Please note: The program does occasionally change. To confirm dates and screenings please call the Arts Desk 10am-4pm, Monday-Friday on 03 8664 7006 at the beginning of the week.

October 7  Cinderella: a ballet
12noon-1.30pm 

Margot Fonteyn features in this 1957 television production of Prokofiev's wonderful ballet. With Michael Somes and artists of the Sadler's Wells Royal Ballet. Choreography by Frederick Ashton. Based on Perrault's timeless fairy tale.

October 21  Cavalleria Rusticana & Pagliacci: two operas in one
12noon-2.20pm

Giancarlo del Monaco's new production elegantly intertwines Mascagni's & Leoncavallo's well-loved operas. With Violetta Urmana, Vincenzo La Scola, and the chorus and orchestra of the Teatro Real (Madrid Symphony Orchestra & Chorus). Sung in Italian with English subtitles.   

November 4  Double bill
12noon  The Dream: a ballet

Based on A Midsummer Night's Dream by William Shakespeare. With music by Felix Mendelssohn and choreography by Frederick Ashton. Features Allesandra Ferri (Titania), Ethan Steifel (Oberon) and artists of the American Ballet Theatre. With Pacific Symphony Orchestra; conducted by Ormsby Wilkins.

12.55-1.50pm  The People's Diva: Joan Carden

Portrait of Australian Opera Singer, Joan Carden, in performance and talking about her art. 

November 18  Christmas double bill
12noon  Jose Carreras: Christmas Concert

A special Christmas performance filmed at the Basilica di S. Ambrogio, Milan, with Jose Carreras and the Orchestra Sinfonica dell'Emilia Romagna. Includes works by Bach, Handel, Franck and Schubert. A wonderful seasonal extravaganza of song.

1.00-2.10pm  Carols from Kings

Traditional carol service recorded at Kings College, Cambridge, in December 2000. With the Kings College Choir.
