Young Readers Program Workshops
These professional development days are for anyone with a professional interest in early childhood education, including maternal and child health nurses, children's librarians, and kindergarten and childcare staff.
The workshops are organised by the State Library of Victoria together with the Victorian Department of Education and Early Childhood Development (DEECD) and the Municipal Association of Victoria as part of the Young Readers Program.
Bookings are required for all sessions and registration begins half an hour before the event start time.
Special event: Opening Doors to Early Literacy
US experts James Thomas, Sharon Schnagel and Nancy Stewart will discuss early childhood development research, and examine techniques for sharing stories with very young children and using song as part of early childhood literacy.
This free professional development day celebrates Children's Week and is presented in association with the Public Libraries Victoria Network's Children and Youth subcommittee. It is a Victorian Government initiative.

November professional development sessions
During November Dr Susan Hill, Associate Professor of Early Childhood Education, will be running a series of professional development days across regional Victoria. These workshops will include information about the Young Readers Program and will cover:
- early childhood development
- reading and interacting with young children
- successful reading strategies.

The Young Readers Program covers the registration fee for maternal and child health nurses.
Dr Susan Hill, Associate Professor of Early Childhood Education and Program Director for the Master of Education at the University of South Australia, is a noted author and researcher in the field of early literacy. She is currently researching the effects of public library family literacy programs and exploring literacy development of children in a range of socioeconomic areas in the years prior to school.
