Lisa, Lyne and Genevieve : thank you all so much for responding to me so charmingly. I do agree with you, Lisa. Melba’s talent and determination were such that whatever path her life had taken, she would have been a brilliant success - or so I believe.
A Happy New Year to all my readers.

Hi Ann,
I’ve been meaning to write to you for decades and I’m sure you have already made the connection. Yes Mazzini Pakenham Beatty was my father’s grandfather and I am the oldest direct descendent of Mazzini.
The story grows because after helping Hengist our family befriended GBS who was my Aunt’s godfather. True to form I am also a ‘lesser literary lion’ and I know my family back in the UK are thrilled that I have at last made contact with you. I live in Brisbane and wonder if you are speaking here in the near future, failing that I will do everything possible to meet you if you are agreeable. Good fortune with Peach Melba and it would be wonderful to hear from you.
Kind regards, Simon.
