What's your favourite work of fiction set in Victoria?
Stiff, Shane Moloney: A humorous fast moving plot, with great settings in Brunswick, and multicultural Melbourne.
Which Victorian writer do you admire the most?
Tom Petsinis: an author who remains true to himself, whether writing fiction, poetry, or plays. I admire in particular his books of poetry, most recently, Four Quarters, which evokes the era of my childhood in the inner city suburbs of Melbourne.
Where do you like to do your reading in Victoria?
Many places: especially a park bench in the Botanical Gardens and cafes.
What do you believe is the best film adaptation of a Victorian book?
Picnic at Hanging Rock, a great evocation of place.
What is your most treasured memory of a public library?
I have loved writing in the domed reading room of the State Library since university undergraduate days, and more so since the skylights have been restored. Most treasured moments have involved stepping out into a spring night from an evening's work in the domed reading room.
What is your best holiday read?
It varies. I am currently reading the novels of Orhan Pamuk. I am also reading Gerald Durrell’s My Family and other Animals, to my thirteen-year-old son.
