What's your favourite work of fiction set in Victoria?
The Getting of Wisdom: Henry Handel Richardson. Because it’s short and tough, and because the writer has no mercy on herself.
Which Victorian writer do you admire the most?
Alex Miller. Because he writes slow, intensely visual stories, and refuses to be hurried.
Where do you like to do your reading in Victoria?
At home, lying on my bed.
What do you believe is the best film adaptation of a Victorian book?
I thought Head On was terrific. Because of the mad risks it took.
What is your most treasured memory of a public library?
The days when the State Library of Victoria used to be a zone of silence. The contemporary abandonment of respect for other people’s concentration is a source of misery and frustration to me. I believe it damages our intellectual life.
What is your best holiday read?
No different from any other time of year. I like memoir and non-fiction even better than novels. Because we live in a wonderful moment of history, in which these forms are brilliantly flourishing.
