What's your favourite work of fiction set in Victoria?
My Brother Jack. When I read it 20 years ago I felt like I was in Melbourne between the wars. I was intrigued by David Meredith.
Which Victorian writer do you admire the most?
Martin Flanagan, for his ongoing attempt to find the heart of things.
Where do you like to do your reading in Victoria?
At home.
What do you believe is the best film adaptation of a Victorian book?
What is your most treasured memory of a public library?
For years I lived in Queensland. Whenever I came to Melbourne I would go to the State Library in Swanston Street and sit at one of the ancient desks either in the dome, or in that room that had the magazines and music manuscripts, and write postcards to friends and family in the north.
What is your best holiday read?
I really enjoyed A Man's Got to Have a Hobby recently. William McInnes, now a Victorian, captures life in Queensland in the seventies wonderfully.
