What's your favourite work of fiction set in Victoria?
I'm not sure it is my favourite work of all time, but I've just finished reading Cafe Scheherazade by Arnold Zable and I highly recommend it. Why? Many reasons, but mainly because I love the power of the story and this book celebrates life via the medium of story telling.
Which Victorian writer do you admire the most?
Again, I'm not convinced he is my favourite Victorian author of all time - there are so many of them! but I do think that Arnold Zable has done an excellent job of taking us inside the Acland Street cafe, and then into the lives of the various characters huddled around their coffees and telling their stories.
Where do you like to do your reading in Victoria?
Anywhere actually. In the car while I'm waiting for my grandkids, in a coffee shop when I have time to relax and explore through the medium of books, on the beach or in the park - the list is probably endless. However, my favourite place is in my lounge room early in the morning. What a great start to the day!
What do you believe is the best film adaptation of a Victorian book?
I don't particularly like seeing a film after reading the book. A great thing about reading is that your imagination creates images around the story. Watching a movie is letting another's imagination dictate terms, and that can be frustrating.
What is your most treasured memory of a public library?
I love the City Library and everything about it. I wandered in there a few weeks ago at lunch time on a Friday and was pleasantly surprised by some live acoustic music wafting through the upstairs areas. I sat and listened for a while and caught myself thinking that I really do live in an absolutely wonderful city!
What is your best holiday read?
When I was very young I liked Enid Blyton's Secret Seven and Famous Five novels. As a teenager I was really into James Bond and memories of summer holidays go hand in hand with 007 novels. Now? I just love to read. A novel like Cafe Scheherazade transports me to other people's worlds and then non-fiction works on social justice and well-being and city culture bring me back into my everyday world and challenge me to live life well.
