Following the devastation of a nuclear world war, most of the northern hemisphere is annihilated. Only a few remote pockets of the earth remain habitable, the area around Melbourne is one of these. A small group of survivors struggle to survive in a world that has died before them.

Nevil Shute was an English aeronautical engineer who flew his own plane to Australia in 1948-1949, an experience which was to heavily influence his novels A Town Like Alice and Round the Bend. Shute moved to Australia with his family in 1950 and settled on the Mornington Peninsula. Here he wrote seven novels including On the Beach.
