Security & lockers

Our security arrangements, which include an electronic theft detection system, roving security staff and bag checks, help us keep the Library safe for you, our collections and staff.


Laptop computers, personal copying equipment (subject to size), notebooks, writing implements and text books may be brought into the Library. However, umbrellas, large bags – including backpacks, handbags, and laptop bags – food and drink (except bottled water) must be left in self-service lockers next to the foyer. Prams, strollers and bags with items for babies or young children can be brought in.

Security guards man the security gates at the entrance to the Information Centre. They may check the size of your bag and ask you to leave it in a locker on your way in. They may ask to inspect your bag as you leave (this applies in particular to photography equipment bags). You can leave your umbrella with the security guards if you don't wish to rent a locker.

We ask that you don't leave personal property such as laptops, mobile phones or text books unattended as we can't guarantee their security.


Lockers are available to hire in Palmer Hall, just off the Library foyer.

It costs $2 to hire a standard locker (which can hold a large backpack) for four hours, $3 for a medium locker and $4 for a large locker. The rental stations only accept cash but will give change if you don't have exact money. After paying, you'll be allocated a locker and issued with a printed ticket showing your access code.

There are 44 small lockers in bay 12 with recharge facilities so you can charge your phone, laptop or other electronic devices while securely storing them. The cost to hire these lockers is $3 for four hours.

A customer service officer is on hand in the locker area throughout the day to help with queries.

If you're visiting the Heritage Collections Reading Room, you'll need to leave small bags and bottled water in the free lockers in this room.
