This drawing is significant because it appears to be the first which shows the octagon reading room. It is a plan of whole site comprising Swanston, La Trobe, Russell and Little Lonsdale Streets showing the Baldwin Spencer block and an attached office to the south labelled Natural History Museum in black ink and shaded pink. Other walls are in diagonal hatching to indicate future work; i.e. the whole of the north or La Trobe Street wing from Swanston to Russell Streets, the north east and south east wings on Russell Street, the east wall of the Stawell Gallery (to be demolished?) and a section connecting the Barry Hall and the Buvelot Gallery. Behind the Queen's Reading Room on Swanston Street, the octagon or Domed Reading Room has been sketched in pencil.
