Sketch plans for whole site from Swanston Street portico to Russell Street, showing a main staircase in place of the 1866 Rotunda leading to a much larger rectangular space fitted out with book stacks, in place of the Great Hall (1866). There are open courts on either side of the staircase which connects the front Swanston Street foyer with the new building. A long open space also separates the main Library buildings from the Museum and Gallery buildings on the Russell Street half of the site. A new wing is planned on La Trobe Street extending from Swanston Street almost to Russell Street for the Museum. The south east wing on the corner of Russell and Little Lonsdale Streets is also shown with a basement laboratory and picture store. The basement of the Stawell Gallery houses a dining room and the caretaker's apartment. The drawing predates the Baldwin Spencer building on Russell Street (built 1904-1906).
