ST Gill, Title page, The Australian Sketchbook by STG, 1864–65, chromolithograph, State Library Victoria
On the title page of his Australian sketchbook, ST Gill depicts himself in a slightly comic situation. Clutching his pipe, folder of drawings and boots, while cooling his feet in a stream, he is distracted by two Indigenous people smiling at him from behind a rock, and is apparently oblivious that a snake is about to bite him on the foot.
