Brickman's top tips for building at home

Words from the wise!

When it comes to building LEGO® brick models, the Brickman – Ryan McNaught – is the person to consult for experienced advice. Being the only LEGO® Certified Professional in the Southern Hemisphere and with years of experience creating exhibitions for all ages, he knows a few helpful tips and tricks to expand your brick building knowledge and further your creations.

See Brickman’s helpful tips below:

1. Build what you love.

Think of something you love - it could be food, a character, a TV show, or your family - and start there. People’s passion and love are what drive people to create the best LEGO® models!

2. Practice!

Like anything in life, the more you do something, the better you get at it - so don’t stop practising! Keep trying new ways to connect LEGO® pieces, and don’t give up!

3. Maths.

You might hate me for it, but maths is actually really important and useful in building LEGO® models! Multiplication helps with planning scale and stud dimensions, as well as SNOT calculations. Geometry helps when it comes to building triangles and more complex shapes with off-stud angles too!

4. Sketch it out.

Try drawing your model idea before you start building - it can really help you turn an idea in your head into a visual that can guide your LEGO® model.

5. Research.

If you’re building a real thing or anything that exists elsewhere like a movie, then do your research on that object before you start building - work out a scale or prototype a distinctive shape from it using parts first.
