Melbourne Public Library, NHE Cook, 1883.
This marvellous old painting captures the Library building in the 1880s, when it also housed the National Gallery and was ringed by a cast-iron fence. The additional wings that now flank the building weren't completed until 1961, and the forecourt statues are still to be added. Look closely, and you can see the pair of lions that once guarded the steps leading to the Library, and which disappeared in 1924.
