In this oval watercolour, two drovers pause by a creek to allow their horses to drink while they light their pipes. One rider turns to view the progress of the herd being driven overland, and to address his dog. Rather than merely reporting a scene, here ST Gill is commenting on a way of life, mateship and the bond of man to animal.
