World War I unit histories

Over 110,000 Victorians enlisted to serve in World War I. They served across all Australian military units: air force, artillery, cavalry, infantry, naval, transport and services (medical, military police and specialist corps).

The State Library and the Veterans Unit, Department of Planning and Community Development, are digitising World War I unit histories.

These books and pamphlets contain descriptions of battles, unit movements and operations, and individual experiences are detailed through diary extracts and letters from soldiers. The unit histories are illustrated with maps, photographs and newsclippings, and also contain listings of officers and soldiers. Many battles are covered, from the Sinai to Gallipoli, Ypres and the Somme.

You can browse the digitised World War I unit histories by military unit or search the full text of many of the histories.

The Library hopes to digitise more histories and continue to make them available online.
