Perspective view from the corner of Swanston and La Trobe Streets of Joseph Reed's scheme for the whole site bounded by Swanston, La Trobe, Russell and Little Lonsdale Streets. The facade is completed with pavilions to the north and south and an extension along La trobe Street with a separate matching building to accommodate the Art Gallery and Museum on the Russell Street end of the block. The roof is finished with balustrading and numerous orbs and finials and the buildings are enclosed in an iron railing fence with decorative cast iron gates at the central Swanston Street entrance. The two lions are at the top of the front steps leading to the portico.
